Getting kids into the surf – Kommetjie Surf Club

Posted on October 3, 2013 · Posted in Surfing, Things to Do

Kommetjie Surf Club was started by Kommetjie resident, Andy Radford (a Western Province longboarder) a few years ago and was aimed at getting his two sons and other children from Kommetjie Primary School surfing. Sadly, it fizzled out.

When Andy left Kommetjie in January this year he handed the equipment over to Tess Davies, a local kneeboarder, with instructions to “get it going again!” In April, Tess, Penny Ploughmann and three young Kommetjie surfers (Ryan, Matt and Shane) got the surf club surfing. A couple of shortboards, one “softie” to share and twelve eager kids aged from 8 to 11 spent Friday afternoons surfing either Barclays Bank, Witsands or Muizenberg.

As the club expanded, more soft boards were needed and the club received gracious donations of boards from Gary Kleinhans (Gary’s Surf School) and Tich Paul (Lifestyle).

Club membership now stands at almost 30 children and more soft boards are again greatly needed to safely teach children the basics of surfing. The club is urgently looking for well-priced boards or donations of softies, mini-mals and fishes.

Kommetjie Surf Club is open to all Kommetjie kids aged 8 to 12 and club fees are R100 per month.
