DEVELOPMENT ASSAULT – DO WE NEED THIS?

RECENT APPROVAL FOR:

  • Wireless 1: 44 units
  • Wireless 2: 101 units
  • Central site: 31 units and commercial node

FINAL AUTHORIZATION FOR THE FOLLOWING FAST APPROACHING

  • Protea Ridge – 102 units
  • Riverside extension – 111 units

KOMMETJIE TOTAL = 389 or approx 40% increase in local population.
IN ADDITION TO: ALONG KOMMETJIE RD AND NEARBY APPROVED ALREADY

  • Kompanjiestuin – 250 units
  • Ocean View Infill and extension – 250 units
  • Vacant plots in Blue water bay and Imhoffs Gift – 30 units
  • Hillside farm – 65 units
  • Dassenberg – 200 units

IMPLICATIONS

  • Loss of Sense of place
  • Serious traffic increase
  • Need and desirability for whom
  • Biophysical environment degradation – habitat fragmentation and corridor constraints
  • Less space for needed amenities like schools
  • More competition for already struggling businesses

KRRA has briefed a lawyer to appeal against the authorizations of Wireless 1,2 and central by focusing on the environmental impacts and mitigating measures as proposed.

THE NEXT PHASE after this appeal will be the land use application (rezoning, subdivision, departures and services infrastructure). This will also involve appeals. These approvals could lead to the actual development taking place.

WE STILL have to make legal submissions on the current approvals and most probably on Protea Ridge and Riverside Glen extension which are in a very advanced stage of the approval process.

TO THIS END residents need to decide whether to resist the proposals or concede that they are inevitable. To resist we need a 100K to cover initial legal costs of opposing such authorizations.

WE NEED MONEY – All contributions to be acknowledged weekly.
