Join KRRA Working Groups to Help Kom Flourish

KRRA Working Groups are volunteer teams that drive projects to keep our village vibrant, connected, and cared for. From parks and planting, to heritage and history, to beach clean-ups and resilience planning – there’s something for everyone.

KRRA Working Groups

🚦 Traffic & Road Safety

Mandate: Advocate for safer roads and walkways.

Recent Activity: Arranged for the installation of two new Stop junctions and a 2m separated pedestrian walkway being built along Wireless Road. Put up painted surfboards requesting people to Slow Down and Love 30 kms in Kommetjie. Working on getting a walkway put in between Ocean View and Kommetjie, clearing obstructed and overgrown verges, getting a speed hump put up in Somerset road, and lobbying for lower speed limits and zebra crossings.

How You Can Help: Join monthly sub-council meetings, report unsafe areas, and support traffic calming initiatives.

🌱 Environment Group

Mandate: Restore ecosystems and protect biodiversity.

Recent Activity: Alien clearing, indigenous planting, beach clean-ups, dune erosion monitoring, Western Leopard Toad rescue, eco-corridor handover, and launch of “Fynforce” volunteer alien-clearing team.

How You Can Help: Volunteer for Saturday work sessions, join the Leopard Toad patrol, or donate indigenous plants.

🧵 Social Fabric Group

Mandate: Building community connection and dialogue.

Recent Activity: Komfest engagement, street parties, full moon walks, book club, reflective workshops, and joining a heritage collaboration with the Simonstown, Fish Hoek, and District Six museums.

🌿 Heritage Picnic: 27 September, KommetjieWe’ll start with the unveiling of memorial benches at the slipway, then gather at the Kom for a relaxed picnic with games, storytelling, and informal interviews about life in our valley. This is the first event of a new heritage project linking our communities through shared stories and memories.

👉 Bring a blanket, join the picnic, and be part of the story.

How You Can Help: Join a full moon beach walk, host a street gathering, join the Heritage Day picnic or volunteer at community events.

🏛 Building & Heritage

Mandate: Advocate for thoughtful, sustainable development.

Recent Activity: Community input on Old Post Office and Spar development, Green Parking initiative, pedestrian-first projects, and updated building guidelines aligned with City by-laws.

How You Can Help: Attend workshops, share feedback on developments, and advocate for pedestrian-friendly design.

🔥 Resilience Group

Mandate: Build disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

Recent Activity: Formed Kom-DRM Coalition, ran risk assessment and emergency planning exercises, appointed Local Incident Coordinator, and hosted talks on fire, climate, and resilience.

🎬 Fundraising & Education

Mandate: Raise funds and promote awareness through culture.

Recent Activity: Launched Kom Winter Film Festival, showcasing local films and raising funds for community projects.

How You Can Help: Buy festival tickets, spread the word, and sponsor screenings.

🏖 Infrastructure & Amenities

Mandate: Improve public spaces and facilities.

Recent Activity: Dune clean-ups, seawall repair planning, new dog poo bag dispensers and bins, upgraded pedestrian pathways.

📢 Media & Communications

Mandate: Keep residents informed and engaged.

Recent Activity: Curated and managed Kom Winter Film Fest. Expanded website and social media, QR codes for donations and street groups, new media team support.

🐒 Baboon Management

Mandate: Represent Kommetjie in Cape Peninsula Baboon Advisory Group (CPBAG).

Recent Activity: Monitoring troop activity, engaging in city-wide management plans, and input on proposed baboon-proof fencing.

How You Can Help: Report baboon sightings responsibly, support awareness campaigns, and attend CPBAG updates.

💰 Finance & Boardwalk

Mandate: Manage KRRA funds and support local projects.

Recent Activity: Stable finances with strong donations; R100,000 ring-fenced for subgroup projects; launched consultation on repairing the Kommetjie boardwalk.
