Kommetjie has been caned by a series of huge storms, with a lot of rain, and a gigantic swell that recently caused mayhem along the shoreline.
The storm sea - coupled with spring high tides - deposited vast amounts of kelp, plastic and other marine debris on the Kom lawn and all over the catwalk.
In some good news for a change, our intrepid lighthouse and walkway expert, Michele Koch, made contact with Catherine Shutte, Senior Professional Officer with the Coastal Management Branch at the City.
The Coastal Conservation Team contacted the correct department, who came and embarked on a timeous and massive cleanup, which was a welcome sight by Kom residents.
"Thanks for the great service and quick response. Much appreciated by all," Koch said.
In other positive news -- What! More good news? Hold me back from the dance floor! -- a work team from the City, guided by engineers at the behest of City Coastal Manager Greg Oelofse have created safer access to and from the beach at Long Beach.
As residents will know, the height of the steps were a danger to the public. This way, while the steps still pose a steep entrance to and exit from the beach, they are at least much safer to use.
Well done Michelle.
Thanks for having the hand rails added to the beach access stairs, a great safety addition, especially for us older folk.
