Road safety expert and KRRA road representative Caro Smit recently attended the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and Road Victims workshop in El Salvador, which covered evidence-based methods to reduce unacceptable road carnage.
The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 aims to reduce road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. Planning is underway for the 7h United Nations Global Road Safety Week (15-19 May 2023) in partnership with groups around the world.
This year focuses on the need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport so that vulnerable road users like children, pedestrians, motorcyclist and cyclists receive the rights to safe journeys, and we move away from concentrating only on the needs of drivers in vehicles.
In the Kom and Deep South area, Caro will work with Cllrs. Liell Cock and Patricia Francke in Ocean View and Masiphumelele on cyclists and pedestrian visibility and safety. The week is characterized by events and activities and the sharing of messages and materials on social media: #RethinkMobility #StreetsforLife #RoadSafety.
