Hello Kommetjie Community,
Here’s your November round-up from the Kommetjie Residents & Ratepayers Association (KRRA) — what’s been achieved, what’s underway, and what’s next for our village.
🌊 LOCAL ENVIRONMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE
🌿 Fynbos & Environment
🌿 Fynforce Kommetjie continues its hands-on work clearing invasive vegetation and nurturing indigenous growth across the village. Recent efforts focused on restoring biodiversity along Wireless Road (thank you Eugenie!) and supporting Kommetjie’s green corridors — keeping our fynbos and wildlife thriving! If you’d like to help, reach out to Mallorie (081 364 5871) — volunteer mornings usually take place on Saturdays from 9–11am. All welcome! 🌿 Look out for the Fynforce and Hyperlocal planting stand at the Kommetjie festival where you can find out more! A letter of thanks from Councillor Simon Liell-Cock: I went for a walk on the mountain yesterday for the first time this month and I can honestly say that in the 16 years that I have lived in Kommetjie, I have never seen it looking so good 🤩‼️‼️ Yes, the flowers were spectacular (the Mimetes fimbriifolius and Tree Pincushions are in full bloom along with many other plants ).But the aspect that really impressed me was the incredible work done by Sanparks ‼️……..
- Paths that threatened the environment with erosion have had steps put in place to prevent erosion.
- Paths have been widened and rocks have been moved from inside the pathways to the edges in order to keep people from going off track.
- Some paths have been redirected to more sensible contours
- Dead branches have been used to close off some paths
Sanparks have done incredible work to protect our environment and make it more accessible - if you have not been on the mountain all l can say is treat yourself 😁 and if anyone knows the person who has overseen this work please pass on my sincere gratitude 🙏. 🌿 Slangkop Mountain Path, KRRA forwarded a letter of thanks to SanParks for the great work done upgrading the Slangkop mountain path.
🌿 Slangkop flower walk, led by Adam Welz, drew 40+ attendees. More guided walks, workshops and talks are planned, with suggestions for future speakers discussed.
🌿 Bio-corridor update: KRRA awaiting ownership transfer to SanParks so they can expand invasive clearing activities.
🌊 Dune management: Concerns about erosion to be raised with Sub-council.
💧 Water Catchment Management Forum: KRRA met with CoCT engineers about improving health of our waterways; regular engagement proposed with 2–3 meetings/year.
🏖 Public Facilities
KRRA is following up on: Kommetjie Beach public toilets and contract for Lighthouse management, recently tendered by Transnet; Boardwalk maintenance: some repair work done by SANParks Voluntary Rangers’ but more is needed; KRRA hopes to collaborate more closely in the future for better outcomes.
🎨 COMMUNITY & CULTURE
✨ Heritage Day Gathering
A powerful, well-attended event brought together Kommetjie residents with families whose roots lie in Kommetjie but who were forcibly relocated to Ocean View under apartheid. Memories and reflections were exchanged and connections grown. A follow-up workshop is being planned.
🎶 New Valley-Wide Singing Group
A new adult singing group for the valley will launch early next year! Open to all voices and people from age 18 onwards, it aims to celebrate shared heritage and the joy of singing together. More details will be shared soon - watch this space and join in when it starts in January 2026.
🪁 Social Fabric at KomFest — “Threads That Connect Us”
Visit the Social Fabric stall at the Kommetjie Festival at the Kom to:
• Add your name to the kite’s tail pieces
• Make a donation to support the project
The windsock-kite design competition (theme: Threads That Connect Us) closed on 17 November. The winner will be announced at the Kommetjie Festival, where kite artist Phil Hattingh will bring the design to life.
📜 Organisation & Governance
Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) registration is in progress, and tax-exempt status and bookkeeping updates underway. Our constitution is under review.
