There will be a public meeting regarding sewage spillage and river health concerns on Wednesday 21 January at the Kommetjie Primary School Hall starting 6pm.
This will be a good opportunity to ask questions of Councillor Simon Liell Cock and others, and for us to discuss as a community how we can improve the health of the Bokramspruit river.
This follows ongoing sewage spills between Kommetjie and Ocean View - including within Riverside Village, between Ocean View and Riverside Village, between Riverside Village and Klein Slangkop Estate, and in the area in the wetland on the left towards Kommetjie after the turnoff to Scarborough.
A flood of enquiries and concerns have been made to the City of Cape Town by residents of Kommetjie and Ocean View, and this is your chance to participate in ongoing efforts to resolve the issue, which has reached a crisis point.
The trustees of Riverside wrote that they had documented and placed all the occurrences on record to both Sub-council and the various department heads. A law firm STBB had also been briefed and were drafting a communication to the City of Cape Town to be forwarded to the mayoral committee.
The KRRA has raised the sewage spill issue with the City SubCouncil, and has requested additional water testing near the mouth of the Bokramspruit, while also engaging with Councillor Liel-Cock and other relevant Water and Sanitation personnel.
The report back from the powers that be said they are aware of the problem of overloaded pipes in OceanView, and it has been built into their budget (July 2026 - June 2027) to put in more pipes/ and increase the size of the pipes. However, as Kommetjie residents, we obviously would like to see a much faster turnaround for infrastructural improvements to take place.
