Hey neighbours!
Itās that time of year again ā Western Leopard Toad breeding season is just around the corner! These charming, spotty little hoppers will soon be making their nightly trek to local ponds, and they need our help to get there safely.
šø Watch Out on the Roads
Toads often cross roads on warm, rainy evenings ā usually in August. If youāre driving at night, please slow down and keep an eye out for them. If you see one trying to cross, gently move it in the direction it was headed (towards the pond, not back!).
š Pool & Pond Safety
Toads sometimes fall into swimming pools or garden ponds and canāt climb back out. You can help by:
Leaving a net, plank or frog ramp for easy exits
Checking your pool daily during the season
Covering unused pools where possible
š¶ Keep Pets at Bay
Toads arenāt fans of curious dogs or cats (and the feeling is mutual). Please keep pets indoors at night during peak breeding times to avoid unwanted interactions.
š§ Teach the Toad Love!
This is a great chance to get kids excited about nature. Talk to them about why Western Leopard Toads are endangered, how they help the environment, and what they can do to protect them.
If youād like to get involved in local toad patrols, lend a hand with signage or help rescue toads on busy nights, Eugenie would love to hear from you!
