Where Art Thou?

As we charge towards the end of 2023, it will soon be time for the art makers in our village to open their studio doors and welcome everyone for a look at their creations.

OPEN STUDIOS KOMMETJIE, a free annual fine art event, will be held this year from Friday 1st to Sunday the 3rd of DECEMBER, 10am -5pm. This is the fifth year of this growing and much anticipated event. Each of our 24 artists will exhibit new artworks created in their chosen medium, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and fine art photography. The art is displayed in their studio or homes and provides a superb opportunity to peek into the creative spaces of the participating artists and engage in the stories behind the art works. In this uniquely personal setting, visitors get to ask questions, see the tools of the trade, work in progress and indeed, invest in original art from the maker themselves. It also offers a chance to be inspired, and to perhaps rekindle your own creativity. This year we are honoured and delighted to welcome Wim Botha as our first guest artist. Botha, who has lived and worked in Kommetjie for many years, is one of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists and has received a number of prestigious awards. Best known for his sculptures, Botha has exhibited in distinguished galleries and museums internationally, as well as in South Africa. Visitors to his studio will get the chance to meet Wim, view his sculptures in progress and purchase his delightful Japanese-inspired wood-fired ceramic vessel. Every year we have a fundraising Give Back project and for 2023, it is the launch of the Tiny Art Gallery (TAG), brainchild of Michelle Beattie. More information on TAG and your chance to win, coming soon and on the OSK website (see link below). The proceeds will go to supporting Hope Town, a dynamic youth movement in Ocean View. Hope Town provides hope and purpose to at-risk young people through creative education, building a healthy community, mentoring, and providing a safe space for this engagement. Our ‘HUB’ for the event, will be the office of Tracey Reid-Daly, next to Espresso, the Deli, Pizza shop and Cone Connection. This is where you can pick up a paper map, view the TINY ART GALLERY, enter the competition (of which Hope Town is the beneficiary) and get an overview of the participating artists. Estate agent Tracey Reid-Daley will be in HUB to welcome answer questions and point you in the right direction. She knows this village well! To plan your weekend, we will have an online interactive map on the website www.openstudioskommetjie.co.za that can be downloaded, viewed on your phone, or printed. We will also have paper maps available at the HUB, local eateries and shops in and around the village. And lastly, each artist studio shall have maps available. So put it on the calendar, invite family and friends and enjoy an inspiring art-filled weekend 1-3 Dec 2023 10am-5pm Please follow us on: Instagram: @openstudioskommetjie @tinyartgallery_capetown Facebook: Openstudioskommetjie
