The western leopard toad breeding season is here, so please take extra care on Kommetjie’s roads – particularly along Benning Drive, where toads tend to cross.
Slow down and keep an eye out for toads on the road, especially after dark and during wet weather. A few extra seconds can make the difference between life and death.
If you see a toad crossing the road and want to help, please move it in the direction it was already travelling.
Swimming pools can also be a hindrance for leopard toads. If you have a pool, consider placing a small wildlife rescue raft or escape ramp in the water. These provide toads and other small animals with a way to climb out if they fall in. Check pools regularly, particularly during breeding season.
The western leopard toad is a protected species and an important part of the biodiversity that makes Kommetjie special.
By slowing down, watching the roads and making our pools safer, you can help protect the toads.
