The free annual Open Studios Kommetjie (OSK) takes place this Friday 29 November to Sunday 1 December from 10am to 5pm, marking the sixth year of this growing and much anticipated event.
Each of our 32 artists will exhibit new artworks created in their chosen medium, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and fine art photography. The event provides a superb opportunity to meet the participating artists and engage in the stories behind the art works. Although we have more artists this year, many are exhibiting together, so there are only 23 studio spaces to visit.
In this uniquely personal setting, visitors get to ask questions, see the tools of the trade, work in progress and indeed, invest in original art from the maker themselves. Perhaps you will be inspired to rekindle your own creativity!
This year we are honoured and delighted to welcome Jenna Burchell as our guest artist. Her fascinating work fuses digital and natural elements to archive memory. Her Songsmith project, (which many will recognize from Spier as her ‘singing stones’) repairs and transforms objects with golden sound instruments, creating interactive sound sculptures that capture the stories of people, places and events.
Visitors to her studio can explore these mesmerizing Songsmith rocks in process, as well her Heartbreak Pot series, soon to be exhibited at the prestigious Dakar Biennale.
Every year we have a fundraising Give Back project and we are again collaborating with the fabulous Tiny Art Gallery (TAG), brainchild of Michelle Beattie. Entries have opened from 1st November and can be purchased online at https://oskfundraiser.site/.
Also available at the SEEFF office or from the artists themselves over the OSK weekend. The proceeds will go to supporting Hope Town, a dynamic youth movement in Ocean View. Hope Town provides a sense of purpose to at-risk young people through creative education, building a healthy community, mentoring, and provides a safe space for this engagement.
The TAG gallery can be seen now at BlueWater Cafe, Imhoff Farm, and in the SEEFF office from the 29th Nov -1st Dec
Our ‘HUB’ for the event, will be the SEEF office of our generous sponsor, Estate agent Tracey Reid-Daly. This is where you can pick up a paper map, enter the TAG competition and, for the event, her office will become a curated exhibition, with a piece of art from each of the OSK participants. Tracey will be at the HUB to welcome you, answer questions, and point you in the right direction. She knows this village well!
To plan your weekend, go to our new website, where you can explore all the artists' profiles and find our interactive map that can be downloaded, viewed on your phone, or printed. We will also have paper maps available at the HUB, local eateries and shops in and around the village. And lastly, each artist studio shall have maps available.
So put it on the calendar, invite family and friends and enjoy an inspiring art-filled weekend
