The new pathway connecting Kommetjie to Ocean View along Kommetjie Road is an important victory in the ongoing campaign to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Measuring 3m wide and 2km long, the new pathway comes after a collaborative effort from KRRA, South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), Ocean View community leaders, Gerhard van der Horst of Red Cliff Property Developers, Dirk du Preez of the City of Cape Town’s Active Mobility Unit, and Councillor Simon Liell-Cock.
The pathway follows the ‘safe system approach’, which assumes that human error is inevitable so transport and industrial systems must be designed to ensure mistakes do not cost lives.
Given that the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety recently launched its #CommitToAct 2026 campaign – an effort to check whether road safety commitments are being implemented – the new pathway is well timed.
“Commitments alone do not save lives. Implementation does,” said Caro Smit, Director of SADD. “Collaborations like this, between civil society NGOs, industry and government departments, prove that communities can be proactive at getting safer infrastructures built for their vulnerable road users.”
